Abstract of Talk
During “Continuous Casting” in a steel plant, liquid steel is solidified in water-cooled copper mould. The quality of the solidified product is dictated by the manner in which heat is extracted from liquid steel in the copper moulds. Due to the size and shape restriction of the billet mould, it has not been possible to install temperature sensors to measure the temperature on a commercial billet caster. Thus, the assessment of the quality of the billet as well as operational issues like breakout detection in the billet caster has remained an unmet need. Fiber Optic strain and temperature sensors have their advantages in terms of their form. They are very thin and a single cable can carry multiple signals. It was felt that this merit would help plug a long-standing issue faced by billet casters.
This talk will cover various issues in billet caster followed by the joint effort of Tata Steel, NML and CGCRI to use Fiber Bragg Grating temperature sensors for billet casting to evaluate the possibilities ensuing.
