Abstract of the Talk

Amongst the eight core industries of India, cement industry plays a vital role in the growth and economic development of our country because of its strong linkage to other sectors such as infrastructure, construction, housing, transportation, coal, power etc. The installed capacity of cement industry in India in 2018-19 is 537 million tonnes with cement production of around 334.37 million tonnes in 2019-20, which comprises of 144 integrated large cement plants, 107 grinding units, 62 mini cement plants and 5 clinkerisation units. Cement is considered to be responsible for about 7% of global anthropogenic CO2 emissions. The manufacture of cements with mineral additions has been pursued as an alternative to reduce CO2 emissions. Therefore, the Indian cement industry has been gradually increasing the share of blended cements like Portland Puzzolona Cement (PPC) and Portland Slag Cement (PSC) in its cement mix.

Portland slag cement is manufactured by inter-grinding Portland cement clinker, gypsum and granulated slag (conforming to Indian standard IS: 12089-1987, specification for granulated slag for the manufacture of Portland Slag Cement) obtained from steel industries. The increased use of Ground Blast Furnace Slag (GBFS) as specified in IS: 12809- 1987 for the manufacture of Portland Slag Cement (PSC) has a direct impact on reducing the CO2 emissions, by decreasing specific fuel consumption and reducing limestone consumption. Blast furnace slag is a non-metallic product consisting essentially of glass containing silicates and alumina-silicates of lime and other bases, which is developed simultaneously with iron blast furnace. Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GBFS) is obtained by further processing of the molten slag by rapidly chilling or quenching with water or stream. Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBFS) is obtained by duly grounding granulated blast furnace slag as specified in IS: 16714-2018 for the use in cement, mortar and concrete.

The presentation shall cover the status of Indian cement industry, various types of cement produced in India, utilization of different waste by cement industry, generation of waste/slags in steel industry, utilization of waste from steel industry in cement plants, characteristics of slag produced in India, comparison of Indian slags with world scenario, barriers in utilization of different slags, utilization of CO2 for mineral carbonation and brief about research projects undertaken at NCB.
