Dr Indranil Chattoraj

Director

National Metallurgical Laboratory

Jamshedpur 831007, Jharkhand

Dear Dr Indranil Chattoraj

The National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS), Bengaluru carries out research in multidisciplinary areas that bridge the gap between the natural and engineering sciences, social sciences, conflict and security studies, humanities and the arts. As part of its outreach programme NIAS conducts residential courses every year for persons in senior positions in the government and industry. The main aim of these courses is to acquaint the participants with current developments and their overarching scientific, social and policy dimensions.

The Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, has been supporting NIAS to conduct courses relevant to national themes for the last several years.  Under the National Programme for Training of Scientists and Technologists working in Government Sector (Women Component), DST has invited NIAS to organise a online course on Social Responsibility of Scientists: Pathways and Outcomes for women scientists and technologists between March 15 and 19, 2021.This course is being organised for mid-level women scientists and technologists with experience in the range of 9 to 21 years. This course is designed to help women scientists step back from the everyday life of science and technology and explore the social in what they do as well as in conditions around them. The resultant introspection on their role in science can be expected to enhance their sense of social responsibility and help them explore possibilities of increasing their own presence, visibility and entrepreneurial capabilities in Science and Technology.  The course is meant exclusively for women scientists in India.

I have great pleasure in inviting you to nominate one or two senior woman scientists to attend this course. It is an online course.  For more details about the course, please see the Concept Note and also visit the websites of DST and NIAS. We would greatly appreciate receiving your nominations on or before February 20, 2021 in the enclosed (nomination and biodata) formats.  The course is limited to 25 participants based on a review and selection process as per the guidelines given by DST.  Both Nomination and Bio-data Forms duly signed should be sent to niasdst-srs@nias.res.in.

All participants are required to attend the online sessions. NIAS will share the links to confirmed participants after screening of the nomination forms. The nominated participants should be formally relieved from their regular duties during the entire period of training programme by their parent department/institution.

My colleague Prof Narendar Pani coordinates this programme.  You may please contact him for further information via email niasdst-srs@nias.res.in.  We look forward to receiving your nominations.

With best wishes and personal regards,

Shailesh Nayak
