Subject: Student Talks on Ethics on 21-Jul-2022: Case studies on misconduct in scientific research by AcSIR Research Scholars - reg.

Dear All,

SEC, CSIR Hqrs has been facilitating awareness programs and talks by eminents on "Ethics of Research in Science and Governance".  We believe that these programs have provided us new knowledge and information on various aspects of Ethics.

It would be important to recognize that ethics in R&D is as important to students as it is for scientists.  Inculcating ethical behaviour in early years of a research career would go a long way in sustaining good conduct. It is also important to point out that case studies play an important role for comprehension of such matters, and especially so when one gets to learn through experience, even when it is of others.

As a part of our continued efforts, SEC, CSIR Hqrs is happy to bring out 'Student Talks on Ethics'. We introduce to CSIR, two research scholars from AcSIR, Ms. Kirti Tyagi and Ms. Ankita Rathore. Ms. Kirti and Ms. Ankita will be talking about two different case studies on misconduct, namely, ‘Uncertainty in Judgement: The Case of Contaminated Research Samples’ and ‘Marc Hauser, Monkey Business and the Fraud in Science’, respectively.

The event shall be held on July 21, 2022 through MS Teams from 3.00 pm and onwards.  The hand-out on the event is attached herewith.

We request you to please circulate the program details to all Divisions/Departments/Units, both technical and non-technical, across CSIR Hqrs and CSIR laboratories.  We also request that all research students / scholars and project staff of CSIR be informed about the event to ensure their attendance in the program. The labs may please arrange for mass participation by students. We believe that this small step from CSIR Hqrs would gain expansion at the labs, by involving more students to help the cause.

Thanking you and kind regards,

SEC, CSIR Hqrs
